Reproductive Management of the Captive Rhinoceros

چکیده
The focus of our rhinoceros research has been the characterization of basic reproductive biology by ultrasound and its application to captive management of these endangered species, work intricately dependent upon a dedicated and collaborative animal care and health team. Our rhino care and research objectives are facilitated bv a rhino internship position created to help with ongoing reproductive studies of -the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicort~is ~n inor ) and white rhinoceros (Cemtotllerir~nl si~nrrnl siniltnz). The rhino internship has evolved into a position which provides a significant benefit to our research, daily care, and medical management of our rhinoceros. This position provides hands-on training and experience in the care of captive rhinoceros through exposure to research, medicine and hushandrv of these endangered perissodac tvls.

109 Reproductive Performance Parameters in a Large Herd of Confined Free-roaming White Rhinoceroses (ceratotherium Simum).
During the last decade, the population of wild white rhinoceroses has been in steady decline, mainly because of increased poaching incidents and habitat loss. Therefore, more data are necessary on reproduction of this endangered species in order to improve captive breeding, which is at present not very successful. Currently, ~20,000 Southern white rhinoceroses are remaining of which the majorit...

Over the last few decades, rhinoceroses and elephants became important icons in the saga of wildlife conservation. Recent surveys estimate the wild Asian (Elephas maximus) and African (Loxodonta africana) elephant populations to be, at most, 50 250 and 637 600 respectively. For the five rhinoceros species, black (Diceros bicornis), white (Ceratotherium simum), Indian (Rhinoceros unicornis), Jav...

The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is on the verge of extinction in Malaysia. At the Sumatran rhinoceros Conservation Centre in Sungai Dusun, the reproductive behaviour of two female and two male rhinoceroses were studied for 8-10 months during attempts to breed them in captivity. Due to the paucity of scientific information on the reproductive biology of the Sumatran rhinoceros...
متن کاملSocial and spatial relationships in captive southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum).
Although critical to the conservation of white rhinoceros, captive breeding has proven challenging because of the poor and irregular reproductive health of many captive rhinos, and social interactions may play a significant role. This research investigated the social and spatial relationships of two captive groups of southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) by examining the frequen...

The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is the smallest of all the rhino species. It is one of the rarest mammals in the world and is in imminent danger of extinction. A study was carried out on seven wild-caught females, three wild-caught males and one captive born female Sumatran rhinoceros at the Sumatran Rhinoceros Breeding Centre in Sungai Dusun, Selangor, Malaysia, beginning 19...
